    Sound and symbol.S. A. Nock - 1941 - Philosophy of Science 8 (3):352-370.
Like the rest of us, scientists, theologians, and metaphysicians have grown worried about the political affairs of the world, and have set their wits to work to find ways of combating dangers abroad and at home. Some of them organized a Conference on Science, Philosophy and Religion in their Relation to the Democratic Way of Life, and met in the fall of 1940 to hear a number of papers about themselves and their work. They met in the hope of finding (...)

Modelling asynchrony in automatic speech recognition using loosely coupled hidden Markov models.H. J. Nock & S. J. Young - 2002 - Cognitive Science 26 (3):283-301.
Hidden Markov models (HMMs) have been successful for modelling the dynamics of carefully dictated speech, but their performance degrades severely when used to model conversational speech. Since speech is produced by a system of loosely coupled articulators, stochastic models explicitly representing this parallelism may have advantages for automatic speech recognition (ASR), particularly when trying to model the phonological effects inherent in casual spontaneous speech. This paper presents a preliminary feasibility study of one such model class: loosely coupled HMMs. Exact model (...)

  7. America's Upside-down Doctrine of Education: Albert Jay Nock's Theory of What Has Gone Wrong — Or Is It Right?Steven James Bartlett - 2018 - Willamette University Faculty Research Website.
The American system of education makes important and sometimes unjustified assumptions that were questioned and criticized nearly a hundred years ago by author and educational theorist Albert Jay Nock. This essay discusses Nock’s theory of American education and finds that certain of these assumptions stand greatly in need of the support of evidence.

IntroductionThe purpose of this essay is to work constructively with Michael S. Marriage in Men's Lives.Steven L. Nock - 1998 - Oxford University Press USA.
Every marital union contains two marriages, his and hers, and there is substantial evidence that married men are better off than married women, both physically and mentally. Drawing on over 6,000 interviews conducted since 1979, the author explains this disparity by showing the close fit between marriage and the goals which men adopt as they age.

  31. Second-Order Cybernetics as a Fundamental Revolution in Science.S. A. Umpleby - 2016 - Constructivist Foundations 11 (3):455-465.
Context: The term “second-order cybernetics” was introduced by von Foerster in 1974 as the “cybernetics of observing systems,” both the act of observing systems and systems that observe. Since then, the term has been used by many authors in articles and books and has been the subject of many conference panels and symposia. Problem: The term is still not widely known outside the fields of cybernetics and systems science and the importance and implications of the work associated with second-order cybernetics (...)

The Union of Two Nervous Systems: Neurophenomenology, Enkinaesthesia, and the Alexander Technique.S. A. J. Stuart - 2013 - Constructivist Foundations 8 (3):314-323.
Context: Neurophenomenology is a relatively new field, with scope for novel and informative approaches to empirical questions about what structural parallels there are between neural activity and phenomenal experience. Problem: The overall aim is to present a method for examining possible correlations of neurodynamic and phenodynamic structures within the structurally-coupled work of Alexander Technique practitioners with their pupils. Method: This paper includes the development of an enkinaesthetic explanatory framework, an overview of the salient aspects of the Alexander Technique, and the (...)

    Using an electronic voting system in logic lectures: one practitioner's application.S. A. J. Stuart, M. I. Brown & S. W. Draper - unknown
This paper reports the introduction of electronic handsets, like those used on the television show 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?' into the teaching of philosophical logic. Logic lectures can provide quite a formidable challenge for many students, occasionally to the point of making them ill. Our rationale for introducing handsets was threefold: to get the students thinking and talking about the subject in a public environment; to make them feel secure enough to answer questions in the lectures because the (...)
